EARL GREY

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Sunday has a sky grey as a softly knitted wool blanket
and the gossamer curtain billows a wondrous light over the bed and us.
I've learnt to read the English skies and guess, correctly as it turns out,
that it's gonna rain all day. Picnic at Devils Dyke is changed to a tea party in bed.
We're invited, alongside lanky rabbit Carrot, Mini Monkey, Mini Lion
and Bad Eye Lily. Cassius is above all elated by getting to drink pappa's tea.
Overly milky for him. Dark, strong and honeyed for us. But he doesn't know that.
- Come under here. It protects us.
- From what, baby..?
- Rain and monsters.

He opens and closes a colourful Peppa Pig umbrella, gets his
fingers pinched a few times but continues. Wants it to enclose us all.
I want to remember this. I write his words down among notes with his name.
Capture some of the seconds from our moment with the camera.

One day I'm gonna collect those notes by the side of selected photographs
in a book for him. I wonder how I can tell him then, that the light
was more wondrous because he was sitting in it. And that it was him
rather than the umbrella that, if not protected me from all of my monsters,
made it so that I could live with the fact they sometimes come for tea.
